The 4.5-liter Toyota 1VD-FTV engine, which is also found in the Lexus LX 450d and Land Cruiser 200 SUVs, has been manufactured at the Japanese company’s plant since 2007. For the Land Cruiser 70, there is a single turbine upgrade in addition to the bi-turbo diesel variant.
Toyota’s first V8 diesel engine is the 1VD-FTV. It took the place of the dated but reliable inline 6-cylinder 1HD-FTE. The engine has a water-cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system with a catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter to comply with Euro 5 requirements.
Since hydraulic lifters are already there, it is not necessary to modify the valves. Due to its size, the 1VD-FTV engine is rather dependable, however maintenance requirements might be unpredictable.
The engine is equipped with a closed cooling jacket, a Common Rail Denso fuel system, an aluminum DOHC head with hydraulic compensators, a cast-iron block with a 90° camber angle, and a closed cooling jacket. It also contains a combination timing drive that comprises of two chains, numerous gears, and other components. There are two versions of the bi-turbo: one with a single Garrett GTA2359V turbine and the other with two IHI VB36 and VB37 turbines.
An new version of this type of diesel engine debuted in 2012. It has a lot of differences, but the two biggest ones are the inclusion of a particulate filter and a more contemporary fuel system with piezo injectors as opposed to the older electromagnetic one.
Description of the designation:
Engine generation 1, engine family VD, two-shaft timing (DOHC), turbocharging, and direct injection are all listed. Common rail, D-4D.
On what the engine was mounted:
Toyota Land Cruiser 200 (J200) from 2007 to 2021; Lexus LX450d 3 (J200) from 2015 to 2021; Toyota Land Cruiser 70 (J70) since 2007.

Problems with the 1VD-FTV engine
Diesels’ early oil consumption problems, which may reach one liter per 1000 kilometers, were common. Usually, after the vacuum pump or oil separator was replaced, the oil consumption stopped. Pistons frequently melted from fuel overflow even in the initial generations of vehicles using piezo injectors. 1VD-FTV
When changing the oil filter, some owners and even service technicians throw away the aluminum bushing together with the used filter. As a result, the interiors collapsed and stopped dripping lubricant, which frequently caused the liners to spin.
Although many believe that too frugal owners are to blame, the main theory for the cause of severe cylinder wear and scuffing is intake contamination through the EGR system and consequent engine overheating.
Toyota 1VD-FTV 4.5L V8 D Engine problems
There are only a handful of frequent issues with the 1VD engine. Cast iron is used to construct the cylinder block. Early engines may have an issue with high oil consumption (up to 2010). That’s as a result of a damaged vacuum pump. The altered vacuum pump never caused any problems. The engine does not enjoy extended periods of high rpm. Steer clear of such driving methods. The 1VD-FTV requires premium engine oil and fuel, just like a modern engine would. Discover more about a bad fuel that, after a few thousand kilometers, will finally break the fuel filter since it is so delicate.
