The Mercedes M273 engine made its premiere in the S-class automobile in the fall of 2005. series of 8-cylinder gasoline internal combustion engines in the V form from Mercedes-Benz. It is the M113 series’ successor. Using the six-cylinder M272 E35 engine as a starting point, the M273 E55 engine’s cylinder block was modified for the V8 configuration, the cylinders’ diameter was increased, a long-stroke crankshaft was added, and the inter-cylinder spacing stayed the same at 106 mm.
A V8 piston engine family used in automobiles in the 2000s is the Mercedes-Benz M273 engine (decade). It was built on the same M272 V6 that was released in 2004.
All M273 engine are an evolution of the M113 V8,[1] and feature magnesium intake manifolds, forged steel connecting rods, one-piece cast camshafts, and sequential fuel injection. The dual-length Variable Length Intake Manifold is installed, and the cylinders are coated with silicon/aluminum.
The new generation of Mercedes engines, which were first made available in the 2005 SLK, marked a significant improvement over those created decades before. The M112 and M113 engines with three valves and a single cam were replaced by high feature engines with four valves per cylinder and four cams that had constantly variable valve timing. A balance shaft was also added in this latest generation. Compared to the earlier M112 and M113 engines, these engines provided more power while making less noise and emitting less pollution. With the exception of the Maybach, the M272 and M273 engine were available in 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.7, and 5.5-liter variations.
Mercedes M273 engine Specs, Problems and Reliability
The 5.5-liter and 4.7-liter gasoline V8s in the Mercedes-Benz M273 engine family are based on the M272 V6. As the M113 engine’s replacement, the M273 engine series was introduced in 2005. In the 2000s, the German automaker utilised the new V8 in a number of pricey models, including the W211, W221, and X164.
The 5.5L and 4.7L V8 engines are made entirely of aluminum. The M276 had an aluminum cylinder block in the shape of a 90-degree V, cast cylinder liners made of Al-Si alloy (Silitec), and aluminum alloy cylinder heads. A forged steel crankshaft is housed inside an aluminum crankcase and is held in place by strengthened bearing covers. The engine is furnished with light, low-friction aluminum pistons and fracture-split, forged connecting rods. 4.7L M273 46 KE’s engine block has 92.9 mm (3.66 in) bores and 86.0 mm (3.39 in) stroke. The 5.5-liter model (M273 55 KE) has bores that are 98.0 mm (3.86 in) and strokes that are 90.5 mm (3.56 in). Both versions’ crankshafts, pistons, and rods cannot be used interchangeably.
