Mercedes-AMG developed the M176/M177/M178 V8 petrol engine series, which replaces the Mercedes-Benz M278 and Mercedes-Benz M157 engines and is based on the Mercedes-Benz M133 engine. Two BorgWarner turbochargers are installed in the engine in a “hot-V” configuration, sandwiched between the two cylinder heads. Five squirts of gasoline are delivered by the new Bosch piezo-electric direct fuel injectors, which are used in the fuel injection system. At the Untertürkheim production facility west of Stuttgart, the M176 engines are primarily constructed by machines with a few components being assembled by technicians. At the AMG manufacturing facility in Affalterbach, technicians individually construct the M177 and M178 following the “one man, one engine” approach.

2015 saw the introduction of the M176 variant for the Mercedes-Benz G 500/G 550 and G 500 4×42. 2019 saw the M176 get an EQ Boost mild hybrid 48V electrical system, which added 16 kW (22 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque to its output. [4] It was installed in the GLE 580 4MATIC and GLS 580 4MATIC vehicles. With improved output for the petrol engine (370 kW (503 PS; 496 bhp)) and reduced output for the EQ Boost (15 kW (20 PS), the M176 engine with EQ Boost was modified in 2021 for the S 580 4MATIC.
M177 ENGINE
The M177 was the Mercedes-AMG C63’s first variant to be made available. This variant of the engine makes use of wet-sump lubrication as opposed to the M178. The turbos in the C63 and GLC63 applications are single-scrolled, but the E63 and S63 applications use twin-scrolled turbos and unique exhaust manifolds. Cylinder deactivation is another characteristic of the twin-scroll application.
Aston Martin has installed the M177 engines in the DB11 V8 and DB Volante (2017-), Vantage (2018-), and DBX as part of the collaboration with Mercedes-AMG since 2013. (2021–).
Late in 2019, the M177 engines’ 48V system, which was used in the M176, was installed for increased performance, better fuel efficiency, and lower pollution levels.

The second version in the series, the M178, is designed for motorsport and increased performance. The Mercedes-AMG GT launched the 345 and 375 kW (469 and 510 PS; 463 and 503 horsepower) variants (C190). Multiple upgrades have been made to the power. AMG GT performance upgrade kit PowerXtra B40S-800 is available from Brabus. [12] The modification raises the output to 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) at 1,750–4,500 rpm and 588 kW (799 PS; 789 horsepower) at 6,500 rpm.
