TD5 HYBRID ENGINE FOR LAND ROVER DEFENDER AND DISCOVERY 2- LBB111680
This will suit a Land Rover Defender to VIN 1A622423 or a Discovery 2 to VIN 1A736339.
For later vehicles see LR076745.
These engines are built to the OE remanufacturing specification.
The Land Rover Td5 engine (Turbo Diesel) engine was developed in 1998. Engineers at Land Rover built a number of engines with a variety of cylinder arrangements and displacements after designing them internally. It took five years of development under the code name “Project Storm” for this new lineup to satisfy all of the “Rover Group’s” diesel engine specifications. The Td5 engine was the first five-cylinder diesel in existence.
The Ultimate Land Rover Defender
The Td5 engine was introduced, resulting in the creation of the ideal Defender. Land Rover at the time was owned by BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG), who desired to employ one of its four- or six-cylinder diesel engines like those found in the Freelander. The Land Rover Td5 engine project, however, gathered steam because the Discovery’s engine compartment was too small for the six-cylinder diesel. The Land Rover engineering team in the UK was given the task of developing.
The Td5 engine was Land Rover’s final internal diesel and the only one offered in the Defender at the time.
The design team set out to lower total operating expenses by increasing the time between oil changes at the beginning of the project. The answer was to use both intercooling and turbocharging.
The Land Rover Td5 engine uses Electronic Unit Injectors to burn the ideal amount of fuel at any given time in order to regulate fuel consumption. When it was first introduced, its fuel efficiency meant that meeting pollution standards did not need the use of an additional catalytic converter.
Performance
The ‘Discovery version’ has 136 bhp of power, up from 111 horsepower in the Tdi; the highest torque, or ‘pulling power,’ was 221 lb-ft at 1950 rpm; and the 0-60 mph time was 14.2 seconds.
Maximum speed: 98 mph
7 Land Rover Td5 Engine Problems (Explained)
Failure of the head gasket is the most frequent issue with the Land Rover Td5 engine, which can lead to a variety of other problems. It is possible to swiftly resolve issues that are brought on by poor production quality, but this is not the only frequent issue.
Therefore, you should be aware of some potential engine problems if you plan to buy a vintage diesel Disco II older than 2005 or a diesel Defender older than 2006. in addition to how they can be remedied.
When properly maintained and many issues are caught early on, Land Rover vehicles powered by Land Rover Td5 engine are renowned for their dependability.
When it was introduced to the market, this 2.5 liter inline 5-pot turbocharged engine was quite sophisticated.
And in the truest sense of the word, it was a cutting-edge unit with potentially fatal flaws.
These issues are generally simple to remedy but, if ignored, could result in an engine failure. Some of them even have the potential to cause the engine to run wild.
In order to avoid purchasing an LR with the Land Rover Td5 engine and having it dramatically catch fire, let’s look at the most frequent issues and how to remedy them. Land Rover Td5 engine
Head Gasket Defect
Head gasket failure is the Land Rover Td5 engine most frequent issue. It would be obvious from:
the engine is too hot
Low coolant levels, milky-white engine oil, white exhaust fumes, and occasionally bubbling noises originating from the radiator and coolant reservoir
To connect the cylinder head and the block, LR utilized plastic dowels, but these eventually wore out and let the head slide far enough to cause gasket rupture.
It might result in a chipped engine bore if left alone.
