From 2008 to 2019, the 2.4-liter Hyundai G4KE engine was made in South Korea and the US and used in a number of the company’s big vehicles, including the Sonata, Sorento, and Santa Fe. For the domestic market, this engine is still put together at Hyundai’s Chinese facility.
An improved range of Theta II gasoline engines (G4KJ Engine) was originally presented in 2008 and had two 2.0 and 2.4 liter atmospheric engines with dispersed injection. The phase shifters on both camshafts and the new intake manifold with a geometry changing mechanism marked the Theta family’s principal distinction from its forebears. Other than having an aluminum block, an open cooling jacket, cast-iron sleeves, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head without hydraulic lifters, and a timing chain, all of these engines are identical. A block of balancers is located in the sump, similar to many big displacement 4-cylinder engines (G4KJ Engine).
The manufacturer has continuously improved this power source, and the engines from various years vary. For instance, a new oil pump and block of balance shafts arrived in 2010, and starting in 2012, such engines started to come with oil nozzles for piston cooling.

On what the engine was mounted:
Hyundai Sonata 5 (NF) in 2008 – 2010; Sonata 6 (YF) in 2009 – 2014; Sonata 7 (LF) in 2014 – 2019; Hyundai Santa Fe 2 (CM) in 2009 – 2012; Santa Fe 3 (DM) in 2012 – 2018; Kia Cadenza 1 (VG) in 2009 – 2011; Hyundai Grandeur 4 (TG) in 2009 – 2011; Grandeur 5 (HG) in 2013 – 2016; Hyundai ix35 1 (LM
Hyundai Theta engines with four cylinders are used in automobiles. The fourth-generation Hyundai Sonata sedan (codenamed NF) was launched in South Korea in August 2004 and featured the third all-aluminum engine produced by Hyundai Motor Company. [1] In Montgomery, Alabama, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) constructed a Theta II engine shop on the same property as where it produces vehicles.
The engine has pent-roof combustion chambers, shimless bucket tappets in the cylinder head, and hollow dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with powder-metal cam lobes. The entire timing system, which makes use of the business’s exclusive silent timing chains, is provided by BorgWarner Morse TEC. The intake side is where continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) operates.

The high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy engine block features a special cassette-type balance shaft module from Metaldyne that includes a two-stage oil pump. A ladder frame reinforces the block at the lower end. Sinteron’s fracture-split sinter-forged connecting rods and the stainless steel exhaust manifold are two further noteworthy features. Three versions of the 1.8L, 2.0L, and 2.4L Theta Engine (G4KE Engine) were available in the first generation.
The 32-bit PCM (Powertrain Control Module) of the Theta uses a contamination-proof hot-film type MAF (mass air flow) sensor to compute the amount of intake air. The EMS (engine management system) software is called EMS-II from Siemens VDO.
Three variations of the 1.8L, 2.0L, and 2.4L Theta Engine were available in the first iteration.
Hyundai and Kia at least use the G4KE engine in the Santa Fe and Sorento. According to the information we have so far about the G4KE Engine, it appears that Hyundai and Kia used this engine in vehicles from 2009 to 2015.
Hyundai and Kia vehicles with Theta II engines (gdi) were recalled as a result of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s investigation into the engines, which is currently ongoing (NHTSA). The promptness with which Hyundai and Kia recalled roughly 1.7 million cars with Theta engines, which were prone to unusually loud noises and seizing, is being investigated by safety regulators.
