From 1989 until 1998, American manufacturer Cummins produced the 5.9 l (5,883 cc, 359 cu-in), six-cylinder, four-stroke cycle, water-cooled, turbocharged internal combustion diesel engine known as the Cummins 6BT.
Along with the 5.9L 6B/6BT Engine/6BTA Cummins diesel engines, the 3.9L 4B/4BT/4BTA Cummins is included in the B Engine family. The 3.9L is a normally aspirated (4B) or turbodiesel (4BT/4BTA) inline four-cylinder engine that was widely used in step van applications, such as bread vans and other commercial vehicles. It has also been widely used in agricultural machinery. Additionally, it has grown in popularity as an engine replacement for compact vehicles and SUVs.
The most well-known engine for B-Series vehicles is the Cummins 6BT Engine. The first diesel engine utilized in full-size pickup trucks as an alternative to the big V8 gasoline engines was the Cummins 5.9 L engine. In 1984, production commenced. It was created as an engine for agricultural equipment made by Case. The 6BT Engine, however, saw widespread use in light, medium, and even some heavy vehicles and buses in the future.
Due to its great power at low rpm and throughout the engine speed range, as well as better fuel economy when compared to the Dodge V8 gasoline engines, the turbocharged 12-valve Cummins engine gained enormous popularity in the 1989–1998 Dodge Ram trucks.
The maximum horsepower and torque of the 6BT engine ranged from 163 PS (120 kW; 160 HP) at 2,500 rpm to 218 PS (160 kW; 215 HP) at 2,600 rpm and from 542 Nm (55.3 kg; 399.5 ft; lb) at 1,600 rpm to 569 Nm (58 kg; 419.4 ft; lb).
Features of the Cummins 6BT Engine 5.9 L 12v include:
A two-valve per cylinder OHV design
Mechanical fuel injectors, a mechanical injection pump, and direct injection (DI) turbochargers
Cast-iron cylinder block with a crankshaft made of induction-hardened forged steel
forged connecting rods and cast aluminum pistons
Cast-iron cylinder head with combustion chambers that have a high swirl
cooled camshaft made of ductile iron
It debuted in the Dodge Ram pickup vehicle from 1989 to 1998 and quickly gained popularity as an alternative to the massive gasoline V8 engines typically found in full-size pickup trucks because to its ability to create torque at low engine RPM and much superior fuel economy. Due to indirect fueling at the time, the Dodge RAM was the only diesel truck that did not require glowplugs for cold weather starting.
