When all BMW M62 engine variations are taken into account, the V8 was utilized in 16 distinct models, even outside of the BMW brand. The following automobiles have BMW M62 engines:
The M62’s DOHC engine has four valves per cylinder, an aluminum block, and aluminum heads, just as the BMW M60 it replaced. The M62 has hypereutectic pistons with ferrous coated side skirts, fracture-split forged connecting rods, and [4] pistons. However, some early M62 engines employed Nikasil cylinder coating in place of Alusil for the majority of their block materials[5].
BMW M62 Engine Guide
Numerous straight-6 engines are undoubtedly the first to come to mind when you consider the engines that BMW is famous for. Having said that, BMW has a long history of producing engines of different sizes. While BMW has subsequently transitioned to a smaller-displacement turbocharged formula, the company’s engine lineup still heavily features big German V8s.
The BMW M62 is one of those ground-breaking V8 vehicles. The M62 engine was a revamped and redesigned version of the preceding M60 V8 that was produced from 1992 to 1996. These improvements to the earlier engine’s architecture enhanced dependability and performance. The M62’s innovative engine block design, hypereutectic pistons, and ferrous-coated side skirts give it strength and make it a favorite among BMW enthusiasts.
With the exception of the S62, the BMW M62 engine served as the company’s top-tier V8 choice from the late 1990s to the middle of the 2000s. It was installed in a variety of bigger, more opulent cars. The M62 was a lump that delivered plenty of power in a linear manner from the E39 5-Series to the E31 8-Series. Even other BMW-owned side projects, such the L322 Range Rover, incorporated the M62.
BMW M62 Engine Specs
Six trims with marginally differing features were available for the M62 throughout its ten-year existence. While the M62 was available in four displacement specifications, some models were merely technological upgrades from the previous iteration.

The M62 was first offered in the M62B35 and M62B44 trims in 1996, with the former having a smaller displacement (3.5L) than the latter (4.4L). In 1998, a new engine designation and an improved version were given to the M62B35 and M62B44. The M62TUB35 and M62TUB44 are the names of the modified variants, respectively. The revised models gained more horsepower while keeping the same displacement and general design.
The M60B40 engine was replaced by the improved M62B44 in 1996, and the M60 engines were replaced by a new modified M62 series. The previous M60B40 served as the model for the 4.4-liter engine. The cylinder block was modified to accommodate a larger cylinder diameter, and the sleeves were originally made of nikasil, but alusil has since taken its place.
The connecting rods remained the old M60, the pistons are new, and the crankshaft is a new steel long-stroke with six counterweights.
The M62B44 camshafts have different characteristics from the M60 camshafts (phase 236/228, lift 9/9 mm), although the cylinder heads are similar to those used on the M60. The valves had a 35 mm inlet and 30.5 mm exit diameter and were still old. The cylinder head cover is made of magnesium, and the plates and springs are lighter. Bmw m62
A new single-row timing chain with a resource of between 150 and 200 thousand kilometers has taken the place of the double-row timing chain. The intake manifold has been altered, the ignition coils are identical to the M52 engines, and the throttle bodies are new. A programmable thermostat was also employed, and Bosch DME M5.2 was used in place of the old engine management system. Bmw m62
