Even though it is an engine that is rock-solid, incredibly fuel-efficient, and currently quite affordable, some of you were unaware of its existence up until this point. The BMW M57 inline-six diesel engine has arguably as much performance potential as a Cummins common-rail engine. It made its American debut in 2008 (as a 2009 model offered in the 335d) and came equipped with a distinctive sequential turbo setup (compounds), 265 horsepower, and 425 lb-ft of twist—numbers that would turn out to be undervalued.
These fast cars have excellent driveability and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. They can also complete the quarter mile in low-14-second intervals with their standard engines.
When the aftermarket got a hold of the BMW M57’s I-6 architecture and robust internals, the engine’s true potential was eventually realized. The platform has demonstrated its ability to support north of 700 hp at the wheels without the need for bottom-end improvements after the platform’s issues with the emissions system and a few other weak links have been fixed. In order to learn more about the BMW M57 capabilities, we spoke with Santjer Performance, manufacturer of the most potent 335d engine. and the common-rail specialists at S&S Diesel Motorsport, who construct larger piezo injectors for them. We immediately discovered that you can create Hellcat-like power for far less than $20,000 (including the cost of the car) without even upgrading the factory transmission. And you can enjoy yourself while driving a vehicle that can achieve almost 40 mpg on the interstate.
BMW M57 I-6 is an unkillable diesel.
In 2009, the BMW M57 diesel made its North American premiere in either the 335d sedan or the X5 SUV. The direct-injection inline-3.31-inch six’s bore and 3.54-inch stroke enable it to dispense 182 cubic inches (3.0L) of displacement. Off the showroom floor, it produced 265 horsepower at 4,200 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm, however timeslips of low 14-second passes at speeds over 95 mph in various 335d’s showed that the BMW M57 was significantly undervalued from the factory. Its special sequential turbo technology allows for quick spool up and a power curve that remains stable until 5,000 rpm. Later, more on that.
There aren’t many engines that go with automobiles from the late 1990s model years up until the early 2010s. BMW M57 Engine Issues: One of them is undoubtedly the diesel engine in the BMW M57. Beginning in 1998, the BMW M57 was manufactured until 2013. It is frequently considered as one of the best diesel engines ever produced, and with good reason. It was available in a variety of configurations, including early simple forms in the E39 BMW and a twin-turbo configuration later installed in the E60, E90, and the E63 6-Series. BMW was able to use the platform for a variety of vehicles and power outputs since the engine’s foundation was and remains excellent. But like many other fantastic diesel engines
