The first Toyota 1KZ-TE model produced 332 Nm (33.9 kgm; 245.0 ftlb) of torque at 2,000 rpm and 130 PS (96 kW; 129 HP) of horsepower at 3,600 rpm. The redline is 4400 rpm. Later models with an intercooler were capable of producing up to 343 Nm (35.0 kgm; 253.1 ftlb) of torque at 2,000 rpm and up to 147 PS (108 kW; 145 HP) of horsepower at 3,600 rpm. At 3,600 rpm, they generated 140 PS (103 kW; 138 HP).
The 1kz engine is a 4-cylinder, 3.0 L (2,982 cc), SOHC, indirect-injection, turbodiesel engine with two valves per cylinder. 96 mm x 103 mm (3.78 in 4.06 in) for the bore and stroke, and 21.2:1 for the compression ratio. The maximum torque is 287 Nm at 2000 rpm and the highest output is 130 PS (96 kW; 128 horsepower) at 3600 rpm (212 lbft; 212 ft). 4400 rpm is the redline. It was first installed in the 70-series Prado in May 1993, and subsequently in the Hiace and Hilux Surf in August of the same year, replacing the 2.4 2LTE engine in Toyota’s Light Duty Commercial Vehicles in Japan.
The ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System – Intelligent) electronically controlled fuel injection system, which has a basic structure resembling a contemporary gasoline injector, is also used by the 1kz engine. However, because it uses indirect injection and significantly higher injection pressures, it is less efficient and uses more gasoline.
